From Arts in Guelph- March/April, 2004
by Anna ContiniFinally there is a publication that stands out among the glut of other teen magazines. What if? is a Guelph-based, literary magazine for young people. It features fiction, poetry, editorials and artwork by Canadian authors of all ages and experience. The publication is a local grassroots operation led by Guelph writer Mike Leslie.
What if? was launched almost a year ago, a few short months after Leslie first conceived of the idea. At the time he was a salesman but he has always enjoyed writing for youth. With plenty of help from family, friends and local businesses, the vision became a reality. The primary goal of the magazine is "to give young writers an opportunity to see their work alongside more experienced Canadian authors," says Leslie.
Approximately 60 per cent of the magazine is made up of fiction, poetry, editorials and artwork from youth, and the remaining 40 per cent is written by adults. It gives a voice to aspiring young writers and also provides a venue for them to demonstrate their creativity.
What if? is published six times per year and is distributed on newsstands and in Chapters and Indigo bookstores throughout southern Ontario. Many high schools have also learned of the magazine's merit and encourage students to make submissions. "It's very exciting for youngsters to see their work published in a professional magazine," attests Leslie. The publication is also chock-full of illustrations created by both youth and adult professionals.
What if? sells for $4.95 per issue or $25 per year. Mike Leslie is the editor and publisher while his wife Jean Leslie handles all of the production. The biggest challenges they face are financial. Their hope is that their subscription base will continue to grow and that the interest that some of the bigger corporations are beginning to show will come to fruition.
