The First Annual Potters Market will celebrate clay in all its glory in a spectacular outdoor setting. Over forty potters from Guelph and environs will display their wares on May 28 and 29, 2005, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the historic venue of Goldie Mill. Porcelain, raku, stoneware, majolica, earthenware, tiles, functional, decorative, sculptural, and woodfired pottery will all be featured.
For many years now Guelph has been home to a large community of creative and talented potters. Most have worked independently, coming together occasionally to meeting at the Guelph Farmers' Market. Three seasoned market veterans - Jessica Steinhauser, Bunny Safari and Tracy McEwen - began to discuss the idea of mounting an outdoor event featuring pottery. The vision was to create an enjoyable and festive atmosphere for both participants and the general public.
In Europe, potters markets are very popular but in Ontario they don't seem to exist, says Steinhauser. Establishing such an event has been on her mind ever since she came to Canada from Germany seventeen years ago. "In Germany every town has its own potters market featuring the style of that region," she explains. After getting married at Goldie Mill two years ago it occurred to her that the historic ruins on the banks of the Speed River would provide the perfect backdrop for a pottery market. The daunting task of organizing such a large-scale event was made possible because the three like-minded friends were willing to tackle it together. They first approached local potters, and then by word of mouth, they became inundated with potters from as far away as Sudbury wanting to participate. To date, a total of 45 potters will be showing their work.
In addition to the wide selection of pottery that will be for sale, there are also a number of other attractions. With the Grain Bakery will be setting up an outdoor European-style café and Suzuki String School students will also be busking among the ruins. To further add to the festive atmosphere, three pottery wheels will be on hand to showcase the potters' talents. Fun competitions are planned for tallest cylinder, biggest bowl, fastest thrower, thinnest pot … to name a few. All in all, the First Annual Pottery Market promises a good time for everybody. This is a rain or shine event and admission is free.
