Most people at some point in their lives will be affected by mental health issues, either directly or through a family member. Spark of Brilliance is a program that brings together such individuals and offers opportunities "to connect with one's creative spark" within a community milieu. It is founded on the belief that healing and recovery can be kindled through the creative arts.
Two Steps and a Glass of Water is a unique, multi-media theatrical production directed by James Gordon featuring the collaborative efforts of the Spark of Brilliance team. It takes place June 28 to 30, 2005, at River Run Centre, Co-operators Hall. Through a collection of original dramatic vignettes, song, dance, spoken verse and visual arts, a cast of over thirty members leads the audience on a journey towards mental wellness, hope and recovery. The writers, actors, musicians, videographers, and artists represent a community of people who are dealing with mental health issues.
"The process involved in creating this exciting new work is totally unique," says Spark of Brilliance founder Judith Rosenberg. The players have been solely responsible for every aspect of the production including script writing, set building and design, music composition, costumes, and promotional material. "During the development process of the production, the rewards for everyone involved became clearly evident as the ensemble witnessed miraculous transformations, and hidden talents emerged," says Rosenberg.
Since Spark of Brilliance was launched in 1999, the community-based program has focused on a series of workshops led by creative mentors who have offered their gifts and their expertise to help individuals discover a talent, an interest or an untapped resource. Rosenberg praises the calibre of mentors who have participated to date and is excited about future endeavours. We have been very fortunate to have had artists such as James Gordon working with us since the very beginning. "We are also very grateful to Guelph Arts Council because as a community partner they have understood our vision and have provided invaluable support," says Rosenberg.
